A strange process...picking out the 25 items that you will carry with you for the next month. Of the thousands of items you could chose. The "good luck" ear rings, the electronic connections and chargers, and those things that somehow make us, us, even when we are 5,000 miles from home. There are certain things that we cannot leave behind. The I-Pod loaded with our favorite music, our worn-out boots that have stood the test of a million cobblestones, the reversible raincoat that fits just right.
As Gene and I repack for the 20th time, we still find it hard to leave some things behind. What is it about taking your own brand of toothpaste? Is it because you don't want to spend time shopping? Or is it that we just feel better, safer, more comfortable with your own stuff.
It is interesting how we pack the fingernail clippers, eyebrow tweezers and wine opener that we will likely only use once. And we leave behind the things that normally go with us everywhere; the car and house keys, my wedding ring, and my signature fragrance.
It seems almost random how we make the decisions, hoping to find the things that define us and keep us connected.
As I finish my repacking, I look at the small bundle of my belongings. It makes me wonder if I really need all that other stuff.
